Back to School refusal

Hi Nicholeen,
Can u please offer insight on our situation with our 11 year old and starting 6th grade? I’m not sure what to do, or which skills to reinforce here

Initially I enrolled my child in a STEM Program for school because public school has never appealed to him, in fact his main complaint is that it’s boring and he doesn’t want to go.

Come this year, I jumped on the opportunity for him to be enrolled in a stem program (something of his interest)which he was on board with at first, he then completely changed his mind. His reasoning was that if it was not mandatory then he doesn’t want to be forced to go. Maybe next year, he said.

That was unexpected for me, but he had his mind made up and was unwilling to even try it

Today was his second day of regular school , and he didn’t want to go at first because the classes are boring except his technology class( which I’m not surprised) Home schooling is not something I can do right now.

I’m realizing that with either school choice , refusal would have come from change or the newness in general . How do I help my child to overcome common anxieties like these and avoid total school refusal in the future and going forward.

Thanks
