Rule of 3

Should I do the rule of three if my child refuses to sit in the calm down chair? I found it works better than holding him because he doesn’t want to do major matinee and quickly chooses to take big breaths instead after which I give him a big praise. However, I’m not sure if I should still ask him to go to the calm down chair after the rule of three? Thank you!
