Enforcing routines, AND birthday celebration ideas

I have two boys, turning 12 & 15 very soon. I am trying to get them in the habit of taking care of certain things every day without reminders. I would like some advice on how to make this happen. We just started using the TSG principles and have had 2 family meeting so far. We are still working on our family mission.

The routines I am trying to instill include:
Making their beds in the morning.

Tidying their rooms.

Emptying their backpacks after school of water, bottles, lunches, trash, and clothes.

Putting their dishes in the sink and running water on them after they eat.

Cleaning their bathrooms daily after school. They each have a toilet and sink to wipe down.

And for my almost 12 year old, he leaves his towel in the floor and water in the tub after his bath (He doesn’t like showers.). He also has a problem with leaving his clothes all over his floor, even with a basket right beside them, up against the wall! He is proud of himself whenever he (occasionally) cleans up really well and during those moments, he makes his bed look beautiful with pillows. But the rest of the time I guess he just is feeling lazy and leaves everything on the floor. I used to be like that so I understand, but I don’t want him to develop a bad habit for a lifetime. I had to break mine, which I did when I started following the flylady cleaning system and developed routines. However, when I try to tell either of my boys about how to do this, I can tell they are not thrilled!

Another task he doesn’t seem to be making a habit of is feeding the fish in our small pond. He always has to be told.

The 15 year old also has a pond job to do every few days but he also has to be told.

I’m sure you can sense my frustration with trying to instill good habits in them. I appreciate any suggestions.

Separately, we have been exploring some family activities to add to our lives like you have suggested in your book. It’s interesting that my almost 15 year-old requested more family activities at the first family meeting when I asked for ideas for the family mission. So because he seem to have interest in that, I am seeking more suggestions for someone his age that is also appropriate for the 12 year old.

In light of that, do you have any $100-300 birthday party ideas that don’t involve a gathering at our house? We have some house projects going on. Thanks!!
