My 12 year old son feel that the consequences he earns by his choices are given to him by me, even though I go through the steps of explaining what he did just now and say "so you have earned yourself an extra chore". He feels that I am GIVING him an extra chore. (He's usually great at getting it done right away to get it done.)
How do I help him feel more self governed and not punished by Mom?
Also He feels like he has to get all his chores done before he gets his "freedom". I require 3 chores every day: clean room, 1 rotating weekly chore, and scripture study with Mom. Then he gets to watch tv or play with friends or whatever.
Do you have any advice how I can help him not feeling trapped until he complete requirements to get his "freedom"? Maybe it triggers a feeling he has no power (this is an established PTSD trigger he has, based on past trauma)
Thanks,
D
