My 16 year old hates school

My 16-year-old son detests school. He attends it though. I am assuming that his poor attitude and the lack of vision he has to the importance of education is the result of a parenting failure. However, I can't see how to "fix" that in myself. Any ideas on how to motivate kids to enjoy their school years? Or is that just life 101 and to be expected?
