“I am a Plumber by trade, 33 years old; Happily married in 2009, since then my wife and I have been blest with Seven beautiful children (eldest is 14, youngest is 17 months). We were introduced to ‘Teaching Self Government’ (TSG) in August 2022, through a friend, who had bought the ‘TSG Parenting Course’. While visiting their home, my wife (who loves reading) skimmed through some of the TSG course content and Nicholeen Peck’s Book “Parenting a House United” after about 30mins she came beaming out of the room, holding up the book and said, “Honey this Parenting Program is really good! We need to do it in our family!” “Okay” I said without showing too much interest. But my interest dramatically increased over the next few weeks she talked about it more and we watched some of Nicholeen’s YouTube videos that were shared with us… Now ‘I’ began to be convinced this was great stuff… a few weeks later, I said to my children “we are going to learn how to do the 4 basic skills, this week!” … we watched this video together "Role-Playing The 4 Basic Skills Of Self-Government" - YouTube and after just one week we began to see great results from applying the limited Knowledge that we had. We borrowed the ‘Children’s treasury’ Books (on the TSG Skills) and so began our journey… Hungry for more, we would write out scripts from watching some of these videos: "Pre-teaching: Gentle Parenting That Actually Stops Bad Behavior Series (Part 3)" - YouTube "Correcting Behaviors: Gentle Parenting That Actually Stops Bad Behavior Series (Part 5)" - YouTube "How To Help Child Calm Down When Angry" - YouTube "How To Discipline A Kid Who Talks Back - YouTube" We soon realised that we as parents had a lot to learn, grow, and change in our parenting and communication styles etc. "The Only 3 Parenting Styles And Their Effects On Life" - YouTube We learned as parents how to be Calm no matter what issues arise (There’s a free course "Calm Parenting toolkit" on the TSG website) In November 2022, we had the privilege of welcoming Nicholeen and her husband Spencer to our Community in New Zealand, for a 4hr TSG Presentation, which was so amazing!! Very soon afterward we bought the ‘TSG Parenting Course’ and completed it June 2023. (We did the 8week 'TSG Parenting Course’- But the ' Online 3day Parent Mastery Course' is even better ... The courses were incredible, we had created a Family Vision, Mission and Standard and many other things that originated from Couples and Family Meetings (where everyone had a contributing voice) but after finishing the course, all the pieces of the TSG puzzle, that we had been gathering and implementing, suddenly just fell into place!! A few months later (at the end of 2023) I became a TSG Mentor because I wanted to share the blessing of TSG with others! My wife also became a TSG Mentor in June 2024 and together we have been supporting families with implementing the program in their homes. We started homeschooling all our children February 2024 and the Lord used TSG to make it possible! Our capacity of what we can achieve together as a family has vastly increased as we have all been working together on our relationships. Our home, while it is not perfect, feels united and predictable… Because of the deliberate communication structure, we have developed with our children through Mentor meetings and Parent Counselling sessions; Issues that probably would have gone unnoticed and grown into major problems have been able to be addressed early on and have turned into learning opportunities for the whole family. Our children who would often run away from parent direction can, now patiently say ‘Okay’ and be Okay to follow instructions and accept consequences. My eldest son, who was displaying behaviours of selfishness, entitlement and disobedience now at 14years has become such a blessing in our home; Our 12-year-old daughter who had ‘role confusion’ now understands her role and is a wonderful support and example. It is amazing to see the changes in all our children! As parents we have learned how to reach and change our children’s hearts - (In the "5 steps for a change of heart" webinar on the TSG website, Nicholeen provided an opportunity for a number of Mentors to share stories about this Topic… I shared a story of heart change with my daughter … Other heart change stories were shared - It is an amazing Webinar!) I think the best thing about this program is that it caters for all ages, and it will enable us to support our children right through to adulthood, the skills are lifelong skills that are valuable for anyone from a toddler to a grandparent. It is truly a life changer for our Family! And I would wish that anyone trying to raise a family, in these challenging times we live in would reach out and use this Teaching Self Government program in their homes! The Structure and Tone elements of TSG are so well laid out all you have to do is pick them up and run with it!
