Grandparents Parenting ~ And Principles for Good Communication With Anyone or Any Group

"Grandparents need the lessons taught by Nicholeen. I have 43 grandchildren. As I took care of 5 of them just recently, using the “Family Council” as a way of solving problems (as taught by Nicholeen) was so helpful to me in working with the grandchildren. Thanks, Nicholeen!"

I loved this comment because it shows that the Teaching Self-Government communication principles can be used in all circumstances with any family members or friends.  I also find these principles helpful in group settings like teaching church classes or advising scouts or clubs. 

Principles to keep in mind in all settings:

Acceptance............Trust................Love..............Correcting or Praising in a describing type way ..............Prepping.............Parent Counselling (Relationship Building)................Meetings (Organizational skills and group problem solving)...................Vision (find out what people want and help them get it by opening communication)...............Look Deeper (really seek to understand).............Four Basic Skills (you can use them and gently tell others how to use them when appropriate too)..........etc.  This list to go on.  I hope you see that you can apply these principles to all your relationships and steward-ships. 

The more you apply the Teaching Self-Government principles, the more in control you will be of your emotions, which will make you and your whole family more happy.  :)

Exciting, Yes, Family

Exciting, Yes, Family Councils are applicable during all levels of family life. We recently tended one of our sets of grandchildren (4 under 5). We new going in there were some challenges. So as the parents left for a week vacation, we sat with the children in FC and established three rules. We soon discovered to "time out" in their rooms would not work because all their toys were there so we changed the location to a more prison environment - sitting on the stairs to the basement. The children got the idea with a few exceptions. We had to keep reminding them but by the end of the week they had it. It was wonderful to see the parents picked up on the FC rules with the children. They made a few of their own and framed them. We are convinced the FC will work with almost all issues of family life. Gordon Taylor
